Final project for my advanced watercolor class. We had to illustrate a concept from a short story the teacher assigned.

...That was Rodney. He was smaller than most of the kids, although he wasn't the littlest. Rodney had a bad leg, from where his mother's boyfriend beat on him. He had to drag that bad leg behind him when he walked, and he couldn't run at all...

...Rodney cried every night, but I never said anything.
Nobody ever visited him.

-Bandit, Andrew Vachss

:bulletred: approx. 5 hours, including sketches & color studies.
:bulletred: watercolor on Arches hot press paper
:bulletred: based off reference photo.

thank you! : )

no one ends up visiting poor Rodney... but he does receive a cute little dog to keep him company. (except the dog gets taken away. poor kid just can't win.)

This loneliness makes me recall somethings of my childhood... this is a great work!

thanks so much. : ) i think as children, we all felt isolated at some points... I know I did. I hope your recollections are nothing too sad!

That lighting is amazing. :o And the whole picture does create a very lonely, almost trapped kind of feeling. Poor fellow.

thanks, jaine! <3 i'm glad the lighting came out the way I had planned. i never considered using shadow and light in such an intense way like this. guess i gotta keep doing that from now on, haha...

are you working on anything new lately? are you taking chibi requests? ; ) we should do a trade of some sort, now that i'm on my winter break and I have some time to indulge.
